Smith Mountain Lake is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Virginia between the cities of Roanoke and Lynchburg. It is bordered by Bedford County to the East, Franklin County to the West and a small portion of Pittsylvania County to the South. Created in the early 1960's by damming the Roanoke River for hydroelectric power, it has become a wonderful place to live, work, vacation, fish, golf, boat, play and enjoy the natural beauty of the entire area. The lake is 20,000 acres of clear water, 40 miles long with 550 miles of shoreline. It ranges in depth from very shallow to more than 250 feet deep near the dam. The water level fluctuates very little - usually less than a foot per day year round.

Boats of all kinds dot the lake in summer - sailboats, power boats, see-doos, canoes and kayaks. Several world class wakeboarders and water skiers live on and train at this lake year round. Children are delighted by The Ice Cream Boat!

In the coves and off the points, largemouth and smallmouth bass fisherman throw their lures. Before first light, the striper fishermen head out, ready to catch the next state record or at least a delicious dinner!
